Review Policy

Please read this before contacting me about book reviews:

Book Review Policy
In addition to this blog, I post book reviews on Goodreads, Librarything, Amazon, B&N, Edelweiss, Smashwords (if applicable), Shelfari, Google Books, GetGlue, The Book Depository (on hold until I can remember password), BookMovement, and YA Books Central (if applicable). Whew, that was a long list! Lol. I accept books of almost any genre (excluding nonfiction, erotica and poetry). I also welcome indie books. Please use the contact form below or send me a message on Goodreads introducing yourself and including a synopsis of your book. If it's a paranormal or a romance (or both), I would also appreciate a link to a short excerpt, since there are so many of those in the market. Also, please let me know if you've been published before, so I can better judge your writing. If the novel is dystopian, please don't hesitate to contact me right away - I am most likely going to go bonkers over your book! Unless I can find nothing to praise about your book (and that has never happened to me before), I will post my review. I do not promise a glowing review, just an honest one - slam-free ;) Please take note that due to the overwhelming amount of requests for ebook reviews, I no longer accept digital copies. I appreciate your interest in having your book reviewed with me!
Ana :)

Unlike Ana, I welcome ebook review requests. ((As of 8/13/12, I would prefer print books if possible due to the fact that the company I work for has banned all electronic devices on the premises. Ebooks are going to start taking me longer to read since I have to do it in my personal time instead of breaks and lunches at work, so if you can, I would really appreciate a print copy.))
I post my reviews on Goodreads and this blog. I only accept review requests; interviews, etc are coordinated by Ana. My favorite types of books are Paranormal Romance, Dystopia, Urban Fantasy and Sci-Fi. I do occasionally read contemporary and historical romance as well. If I accept your book for review, I promise to post an honest review in a timely manner. You can email me at pefrw@yahoo.com.

Dear Ana and Rachel,
I am a new author and just uploaded my debut ebook novel APOTHEOSIS on Amazon.
It has dystopian undertones in that it satirises the modern world as a capitalistopia set against the background of a lost Golden Age from pre-history ie before The Fall and banishment from the Garden of Eden.
The story centres around an ancient palimpsest which when read can lead to instant gnosis or enlightenment (depending on the reader's current state of awareness).
From Renaissance Florence to modern day London, the world's global elite have been successful in suppressing its powerful message until it lands in the hands of an unsuspecting busker on the London underground.
Apotheosis - as well as meaning the highest point, a glorified ideal etc - describes the transformation of man into God.
During his epic struggle against CRONOS - gatekeepers between the powers-that-be and the hoi polloi - the busker discovers revelations about mankind's true destiny and that the potential to build a new Golden Age lies in the everyday choices we all make.

You can read the first few chapters for free on Amazon.
Hope you enjoy it.

Hello Ana,
I'd love for you to have a look at my book and if you are in the U.S. I'm happy to send you a book for read/review.The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap is a historical fiction (synopsis to follow. If it appeals to you please contact me at ptmahurin@sbcglobal.net

Synopsis/blurb/short bio:
The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of
the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for gross indecency under Britain’s recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When news of Wilde’s conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wilde’s imprisonment. It is a chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing.
“Paulette Mahurin’s first novel is surefooted and unflinching in its portrayal of a singular and unique character and her compelling struggles. Compassionate and confident, Mahurin allows Mildred’s story to burn through onto the page with all its inherent outrage and tenacious, abiding love. Here is a character we can champion—flawed, striving, surviving— and fully embrace in her awkward, beautiful navigation of a world that resists her in every way.” Deb Norton, Playwrite/screenwriter of The Whole Banana
“If you need to question your values, read this book! The author captures the intolerance and hypocrisy of a 1895 Nevada town, and its transcendence in time through tolerance and understanding. The angst and pain that two women feel daily, living the ‘lie’ of their lesbian relationship, and the prejudice they must endure, is unconscionable. I was moved to tears by their struggle in the face of the conflicted values that continue
to dominate our ‘modern’ society.” William K. Fox, PhD, Professor of Zoology

Paulette Mahurin, an award-winning author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--Max and Bella. She practices women’s health in a rural clinic and writes in her spare time.

Hi Rachel and Ana: I am interested in having my specualtive fiction book reviewed. Below is the basic information. I am also sending you, Rachel, an excerpt.

The Wanderlust series began with a concept that I have pondered over for years- things never change. The first book- Love & Hate was more than a book I wanted to write; I needed to write it!
The series explores the connection between the human condition, our deepest desires, convoluted and warring emotions, and the inner demons that shape and influence our lives. Wanderlust is the experience of living a tesseract life: forever trapped in the vicious cycle of distortion- a false reality. I wanted to expand on the idea that reflections of the past haunt our present state and the future likewise will continue in the same redundant and stagnant manner if we never conquer ourselves.
Wanderlust is a place of no escape- we travel through our lives, aimlessly, searching for purpose and meaning. Often times, I wondered how the devils and demons of our past effect the outcome of our present, when what we love is jaded, empty, and lost.
We wander for the unforgotten. We wander for our dreams. We wander because we can’t let go. I’ve learned to embrace Wanderlust; I’ve relived it with ink and paper. In time we must all embrace our inner demons because things never change.

Teaser: On a muggy summer’s evening in rural Osnaburg Township, Ohio, Autumn Marseille meets the mysteriously beautiful and angelic David Huntsman, and her life takes a terrifying and thrilling turn. Plagued with a ghastly omen of her impending death and battling the impediments of an abusive and volatile relationship and the dark secret that binds her to it, Autumn struggles to understand her reality which has transformed into a tantalizing nightmare. As the visceral obsession with David consumes her life, she finds herself entwined in a vicious cycle of love and hate.
Determined to uncover the hidden intentions of The Reign, a powerful and vindictive clan that stalks her even in her sleep, Autumn seeks out the nature of David’s involvement with them…before it’s too late. One fateful decision will change the course of her life forever and ignite an in-depth investigation, headed by the vigilant, young Detective Spenser Gabriel, who will stop at nothing to unveil the mystery and discover the truth.
Will the dreadful prophesy be fulfilled…or will David and Autumn be lost in Wanderlust forever?

About the Author: Madasin Mayfair is a published poet and essayist, debuting her first novel- Wanderlust: Love & Hate- from the highly anticipated Wanderlust series. A 2008 English graduate from Malone University, she is currently a graduate student at Northwestern State University pursuing a Language and Literature Master’s degree. Madasin grew up in Osnaburg Township, and currently resides in Massillon, Ohio with her husband, daughter, and German Shepherd Dog.

Ana,

I am a Las Vegas-based author interested in pitching you on reviewing my second novel – In the War Zone – an unconventional contemporary love story that is not about war or the military. Available on Amazon in paperback (223 pages) , I published it with CreateSpace in February 2012.
The protagonist - Gibb Quinn - a former street fighter raised by his single mother in a trashy Las Vegas trailer park, having risen to become a star computer salesman for the Big Byte Corporation in Seattle, is sent to rescue a failing retail outlet in a small Connecticut coastal town where he is treated as a "Vegas hustler." Trouble starts the day Alicia Farrell, aka the virgin princess, aka the belle of Chatham township, and her mink clad mother - members of the local aristocracy - visit the store to purchase a PC. Alicia's subsequent visits for software lessons from Gibb, followed by an ordeal at sea, convince the townspeople and their Yalie overlords that the Vegas hustler has designs on her. With the rumor mill on fire, Alicia is at odds with her family and her Yalie fiancé. From there the story proceeds apace to its surprise ending.

There is a lot more to the story than is possible to convey in this very brief synopsis and without giving away too much of the story line. I’m prepared to send you a copy.

Best regards,

John Henry Brebbia

Hello Ana,

I have written a children's novel (168 pages) called Far Beyond. I like to call it a transition novel for young readers because I wrote it with the hope that a parent would read it until the child feels comfortable with their reading skills to read it to themselves or to their parent.

Far Beyond is the story of a young girl who befriends a magical gnome-like creature called a mischief mockian (mischief maker in english). What initially starts out as a simple friendship turns out to be the biggest adventure that either have every embarked upon. As kids learn to read, they can follow along to find out whether Kelcy and Fabian can save the mockian's magical home from and evil not seen in hundreds of years.

I would love it if you would review Far Beyond and provide me with your input. The book is available in paperback and I could send out a copy as soon as you request one.

Sincerely,
Chris Ossman

P.S. - I also have a collection of unrealted but odd tales called "Short Shorts" that I would love for you to review.

Dear Ana:

Hello my name is Dionne Lee Nelson. I found your site and I see that you do book reviews. Well the name of my book is called Grandelyn and here is a description for the book.

Set in a fantasy world that is both harsh and beautiful, Grandelyn follows the journey to freedom of an enslaved group of people. Oppressed by an evil dictator, the slaves appear doomed to a lifetime of torture and servitude. But an unlikely leader rises among them and offers a chance for freedom. Ariyah, the beautiful young daughter of a rebellious slave, grows to become a fierce warrior and a reluctant leader in the eyes of the people. Ariyah attempts to lead the slaves out of bondage and into a new life – in a beautiful yet mysterious land called Grandelyn. After years of pain and suffering, Ariyah and her people find that Grandelyn offers the potential for peace and happiness. But Grandelyn has dark secrets that are about to be revealed. Those secrets, and a dictator who is unwilling to relinquish his grip, threaten everything that Ariyah and the others have fought so hard to attain. In effect, Grandelyn is the story of two journeys, and two transformations. One is the journey of an enslaved people struggling to transform themselves to a free people. The other is the journey of a young girl struggling to quickly transform from a child slave to a leader. Both journeys have unexpected and dangerous consequences. All journeys must end. Will both of these journeys end in the peace and prosperity of Grandelyn, or in a dark new world?

If you think you might be interested in reviewing it (no obligation of course), I'd be happy to send a complimentary copy if you'll reply with your snail mail address or an e-read version of it.

I have two other books published as well, The Mafia Princess Diaries and The Mafia Princess Diaries: The Takeover, but Grandelyn is my first hand at fantasy and showing my growth as a writer and author.

Best Regards,
Dionne Lee Nelson

Dear Ana,

My name is Gabrielle Arrowsmith. I am the author of Concealed in the Shadows, a novel that I recently self-published. This novel is best categorized as YA fiction and falls into the action, suspense, and sci-fi (as it's set in a dystopian future - no extraneous creatures) sub-genres. Although YA is the best classification, adults of various ages have read and loved the story.

Here is the full description:

Sydney Harter has long awaited September 12th, 2033, her eighteenth birthday. She can finally apply for guardianship of her sister Evvie, her only family and entire world. Sydney holds a sliver of hope that they will be lawfully reunited, and that light will return to her desolate life, but she is prepared to defy authority and risk everything to escape Miles County so that she and Evvie can live full lives together.

Escaping will be difficult and dangerous. Citizens are bound to their county by sophisticated chip implants that deliver shocks to anyone who crosses the county's electric barrier. Sydney is very clever, but her trickery is limited against the all-seeing eyes of county technology. It seems impossible to escape into the forgotten forests and cities of the past, but Sydney is determined to find a way if she is denied guardianship of her sister. For years she has longed to break free from the government's experimental Petri Dish and the hallowed drones that inhabit it.

What Sydney doesn't know is that the county has particular interest in her. Her place in this complex dystopia is about to change. Deceit, fear, and warfare, will come to characterize her life, yet her love for Evvie will always prevail. She must protect her sister, but at what cost?

Concealed in the Shadows is a novel with gripping action, intriguing suspense, and unexpected turns of events. The situations and decisions that the characters must face pull at the very fabric of the human heart.

The subtext artfully examines an array of timeless social and political complexities, fitting this novel for both adults and inquisitive, young readers. The heart and soul are equally satisfied through immersion into such human themes as trust, love, and courage.

Concealed in the Shadows is about 100,000 words in length. Its Flesch Reading Ease score is 71.9. Its average grade level is *6.2. The interest level of this novel is **MG+ through adult.

*Average based on scores from Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning-FOG, Coleman-Liau, SMOG Index, and Automated Readability Index.
**This book is not recommended for the lower middle grades due to the following 0-5 scale rating assessed by author:
Language - 1
Violence - 3 (Elements of war)
Sexual Content - 2 (Characters who have experienced or fear rape - not described)
Adult Concepts - 4

If you are interested in reading and reviewing the book, I will make it available to you in any format you prefer.

I believe in the worth of my writing and, more importantly, the story I've created. I would deeply appreciate your help in garnering readership.

Thanks for your time,

Gabrielle Arrowsmith

Hi Ana / Rachel

I found your details in the Book Reviewers Yellow Pages. I'm a new writer from the UK and have just self-published my debut novel, SKY. I've previously been published as a writer of non-fiction, but this is my first venture into the world of fiction

I've listed the words from the back cover and the prologue below - you can read more on Amazon's Look Inside using the link below. It's different to many YA in that it's written mainly from the male lead's POV, but also contains two strong female characters. Anyway, if you're interested in reading/ reviewing it, I can either post the paperback, or email the .mobi, .epub or pdf.

Title: SKY
Genre: YA Sci-fi/ fantasy
Words: 78,000
Author: R.E. Palmer
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Sky-ebook/dp/B00AFWFY9U
email: roy@repalmerbooks.com

BACK COVER:
Tomas Moone has a secret - he’s terrified if anyone found out, he’ll lose the girl of his dreams he’s so desperate to meet.
Selene has a secret - she fears if Tomas discovers the truth, he’ll reject her, and the last of her race will be lost forever.
Carly has no secrets – she’s in a coma. If Tomas fails to rescue her, she will suffer an eternity of horror and torment.
For the first time in her career, Shelley has a killer story, but she dare not tell it… no one would ever believe her.

PROLOGUE
In the timeless space between consciousness and sleep, Tomas Moone met the girl he would love for the rest of his short time on Earth. It happened during one of those perfect summer days you don’t want to end. He lay on the grass, gazing up at the sky, trying to look at those strange, squiggly things you get in your eye. But as soon as he caught a glimpse of one, it darted away. As Tomas drifted off to sleep, he saw her face and named her Sky. She seemed just as surprised as Tomas, but then the small, blonde girl with the pretty face smiled and disappeared.

I look forward to hearing from you soon

Greetings Ana and Rachel,

I had to google the meaning of dystopian, and according to Wikipedia, I believe my book, The Sin-Eater's Daughter may qualify. I also have a book trailer you may enjoy watching which is posted on uTube and other sites.

About
The Sin-Eater's Daughter
By: Michele L. Hinton

New Orleans - 1846 - Jedidiah Lucas was born under a cloud of misfortune. After the Civil War, circumstances force him to leave New Orleans and destiny leads him to Black Water Township in Louisiana. This quiet, peaceful town, nestled by the woods of Black Water Swamp, has a problem. Their Sin-Eater has died, and they desperately need another to take his place. The leadership of the town sees opportunity when Jedidiah arrives. By manipulating certain information, the young man is forced to stay, and he is taken in by Paloma Day, an old Gypsy fortune teller whom everyone calls the swamp witch.

Trouble begins with the birth of twin girls, only one of them is pronounced dead at birth. But is she? When a lie is told and a secret is kept, hatred, prejudice and the superstitious nature of the town’s people bring dire consequence to a young girl with a special ability. When things go terribly wrong in Black Water, the blame is placed on Hattie - The Sin-Eater’s Daughter.

The following excerpt for a sample of my writing style:

Chapter 1

The sounds of the night filled the cool air of Black Water Swamp. Bullfrogs croaked their love songs to any female that would listen. The hissing of a snake echoed in the breeze as it was about to acquire a meal. Leaves rustled on the trees, and dead branches fell to the ground. The chaos of the night sounds blended together as a soothing noise. Suddenly everything stopped. The quiet was deafening.

Paloma awoke from her sleep and drew a deep breath. She sat up and looked at her husband, Benjamin. He was sleeping peacefully. She slipped out of bed and headed for the kitchen. After taking a small pouch of herbs from the cupboard, she put a shawl around her shoulders and went outside. The moon was full and a dark, thin cloud, shaped like a crooked finger, stretched across its face and pointed downward.

Benjamin was aroused from his sleep by the smell of smoke and found his wife missing from his side. He adjusted the patch he wore over his dead right eye, got up and went to the door. He saw her sitting on a log bench looking into a fire. As he leaned against the door frame and stared at her for a moment, he thanked heaven for her presence in his life. She was the only bright spot in his existence. Though he was a man kept at a distance by the town’s people he served, he was also the envy of every man in it, for Paloma was the definition of beauty, whereas he was the beast - just as in the fabled story. He left the porch and sat down beside her.

“Something’s bothering you.” Benjamin brushed a strand of black hair behind her ear and put an arm around her. “I’ve seen this look on you before.”

Paloma looked lovingly into his good right eye and caressed his scarred cheek with her hand. She turned back to the fire, took a pinch of herbs from the leather pouch and tossed them in. They sizzled and crackled in the flames, and a ringlet of smoke circled upward. “A child was born tonight.” She looked up at the sky. “He was born under a bad moon. Life will be hard for this boy.”

Benjamin watched the finger-like cloud dissipate. “I’m sure there were several children born this night. Does that mean all of them will have misfortune?”

Paloma took another pinch from the pouch and threw it into the fire. “No, I just see this one.”

***

I hope you enjoyed the preview and I'm hoping to hear from you. Thanks for your kind attention

Dear Ana,

Hello, my name is Shannon John. I am the editor-in-chief of Ambannon Books and --more importantly at the moment-- the editor of our premier publication, In Mint Condition: 2013. The book is an amazing anthology spanning all genres and themes. The sixteen short stories and poems were written exclusively by members of the largest Stephen King fan site on the internet, TheDarkTower.org, but please let it be known that the Stephen King connection stops there. This is not fan fiction, or a tribute to his work. Each entry in the anthology will include its own specific artwork, as my staff and I have sought out the best and most talented artists currently working in the business. Scanning the Table of Contents below reads like a current “Who’s Who” in the art world as well as a (I’m hoping) future “Who’s Who” in the literary world.

Table Of Contents
1. "Mr. Scratch’s Murder Circus" by Jeremy Gooch. Artwork by Erin Wells.
2. "The Receptionist” by Bob Ireland. Artwork by Allen Koszowski.
3. "The Train Graveyard” by Ariel Bosi. Artwork by Heather Armata.
4. "Seagrass Encounter” by David Swearingen. Artwork by Rachel Readman.

Sixteen authors, sixteen artists. One anthology. In Mint Condition: 2013.

We hope you will accept our book, In Mint Condition: 2013, for review. It has been professionally edited and is currently slated for release in early 2013. We feel that your word will go a long way with potential readers, and that’s precisely what we’re looking for. We are releasing the book in two formats: A Signed, Limited Hardcover Edition with a low print run of only 100 copies (priced at $49.99), and a Trade Paperback Edition (priced at $9.99). We held a pre-sale not too long ago and we are proud to say that most of the Hardcover Editions have sold out. My staff and I are working overtime to promote this book as much as possible, as we feel that we have a true gem in our hands that deserves to be read. We will be advertising the book online, in newspapers, in magazines, on the radio, on television, and anywhere else that people will take notice.

Our Reviewer Copies of the book will be printed in early 2013, prior to the book’s release, please let us know if you would be interested in receiving a copy, and where we can send it. Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy In Mint Condition: 2013.

Best Regards,
Shannon John
